CLASS MIGRATION

CLASS MIGRATION

One of the sensitizing concepts of pragmaticist interpretive sociology is class migration. The term is coined by H. A. Tanhaie to explain vertical or horizontal movement in social stratification. During his historical induction Tanhaie found out that an individual may migrate from subordinate class to the dominant class in order to cover up his/her ideals. The class substitution is an indicator that shows the interpretive as well as symbolic nature of the human society, hence the system of social stratification. The structure of social class is dialectical in pragmaticist interpretive theoretical apparatus. Since social reality and human interpretation influence one another bilaterally, any changes in either of them makes changes to the other. It’s possible for a class migrant to keep his/her original social status, housing, economic status and yet, get transformed into the class destination in a symbolic sense. In this way the class migrant puts his/her class function aside to make a temporal access to the functions of the destination class. For instance, Frederick Engels as a member of the main stratum of the dominant class tried to migrate to the subsidiary stratum in subordinate class to support Karl Marx as well as lower social class people.
